Ask Janus: Suspension Bondage

I'm looking for the best book or resource on doing suspension safely. If you have recommendations,
I'd really appreciate it.

There are a lot of rope bondage books out there that mention suspension, but (as far as we know) none that deal with suspension singularly. We'll list a few books we like for general bondage below.

Some of our bondage afficianados have told us that while rope bondage of all sorts is pretty easy to learn from books, suspending someone is a bit different. At least one enthusiast believes that suspension might not be covered in a book because of liability, which actually makes sense in our litigious society.

In absence of books, this is one of those activities that is best accomplished by learning from those who participate in suspension bondage. In SF, a rope peer group meets each month - see www.sfrope.org. You may have groups in your area. If there are no groups, it does seem like rope bondage enthusiasts are prone to sharing knowledge, so look for others around you who might be into this kink. They may be happy to share their knowledge.

In any case, suspension is something of which you should be respectful because of the physics involved. No one wants to drop someone from any height to the floor for the sake of a little kink and perversion.

Here are some general bondage books:

Two Knotty Boys Showing You The Ropes: A Step-by-Step, Illustrated Guide for Tying Sensual and Decorative Rope Bondage

Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook

Shibari You Can Use: Japanese Rope Bondage and Erotic Macramé by Lee/Bridget Harrington

The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage by Midori

Most, if not all, are available at amazon.com or at a kinky bookstore near you.

Hope this helps,

The Ask Janus Team
