Roller Derby Recap
Social hosted a group of small group of kinksters at the Bay Area Derby Girls (B.A.D. Girls for short) roller derby last Saturday, July 11. I am still buzzing from the excitement.
When we got there at 6:30, there was already a line. I knew it was going to be good. We raced inside and grabbed seats on the front row. Score! We had a small group, just seven, but we held our own cheering and booing like seasoned fans. The best part about the roller derby is that you don't have to learn a lot about rules to figure out how it works. You can pick out the lead jammer from by the glittery star on her helmet (and, well, because she is the one they are trying to beat to all hell while she tries to score points).
It's actually pretty funny to see everyone spill out and trip over each other, even when it is the team you are rooting for. Maybe that's the sadist in me. But we were laughing just as much as we were cheering. In the end, San Francisco's team lost to Richmond, but you know, Richmond is kind of a bad girl town. It's okay.
One member from our group won one of the raffles that night, and he'll be rocking out to Judas Priest and Whitesnake later this month - a fitting prize at the derby. A few people also gave donations for Rocket Dog Rescue, a rescue organization that brings doggies to the derby for adoption and as a fund raiser. The kicker was that their donation bucket holder was this little boy, maybe about four years old, dressed as a zombie with a hole in his forehead (an homage to the SF ShEvil Dead team). It was disturbingly funny.
Most all of us headed over to the Citadel afterward to celebrate the wedding festivities from earlier in the day and play it up after watching a few hours of rough girl action.
It was a rocking start for Social, and we're looking forward to more events like these.
