You must be at least 18 years of age and have a personal interest in BDSM to join the Society of Janus.
  • If you live within the nine Bay Area counties (San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano), we require attendance at an Orientation before you join. Cost of Orientation is $5.00.
  • If you live outside the nine Bay Area counties, we do not require attendance at an Orientation before joining, but encourage you to attend one as a member, if possible. An At Large Orientation Packet costs $3.00.
  • If you live outside the USA, please contact us via email or postal mail for Orientation/Membership information before submitting an application.

Bay Area Applicants

Orientations are usually held the first Monday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday of each month; see the calendar for specific dates of upcoming meetings. To attend an Orientation, please make a reservation no less than forty-eight hours in advance by email. or by phone at 415.292.3222.

Orientations start at the time listed on the calendar. Doors are locked shortly after the Orientation starts. Orientees will not be admitted once the doors are locked. Here are further Orientation guidelines.

Orientation format:

  • Basic information about Janus - What we do and don't do.
Member introductions - When and why they joined, what Janus has meant to them, along with any offices held and activities participated in.
  • A short break - time to use a restroom and/or get refreshments.
  • Small discussion groups (usually about 4 orientees and 2 members) - a chance for you to introduce yourself, ask questions and get more comfortable before Orientee introductions.
  • Orientee introductions - Similar to Member introductions, this is where orientees have a chance to introduce themselves, but addressing everyone (orientees and members) as a whole.

You must attend the entire Orientation to be considered for membership. At the end of the Orientation you will receive a membership application and a program pass. If you are certain that Janus is the place for you, you may fill out the application, turn it in immediately (along with your $40 membership fee). If you want some time to think it over, you may take the application with you and return it by mail whenever you like. Either way, your program pass will entitle you to visit your choice of upcoming Janus programs for free--to help you make your decision or, if you've already joined, to welcome you to the Janus community.

If you are accepted for membership, you will receive your membership card in your first issue of Growing Pains. If Janus is unable to extend you membership, you will receive a full refund of your membership fee.

Confidentiality is very important to us. Anything mailed to you from Janus is sent in a plain envelope without Janus identification (only our PO Box address). All personal information divulged in Janus meetings must be held strictly confidential. By accepting an Orientation invitation, you agree to maintain the confidentiality of all other attendees - orientees and members.

Future Janus orientations are typically scheduled 4-6 months in advance.

See the Calendar of Events for upcoming dates and times.

Orientations normally run from 8-10 pm on weekdays and 3:30-5:30 pm on Saturdays/Sundays.
